We are deeply saddened by the devastating events that took place at the Lapu Lapu Festival in Vancouver. On behalf of the First Nations Health Foundation, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and communities impacted by this tragic loss of life and the many injuries sustained.
The Lapu Lapu Festival honours Lapu-Lapu, an Indigenous leader of the Philippines who heroically resisted colonization more than 500 years ago. His legacy of strength, courage, and self-determination deeply resonates with First Nations peoples, whose own histories of resistance and survival continue to inspire our work.
The pain of this tragedy is felt not only by the Filipino-Canadian community, but by all who value the power of culture, community, and collective memory. We stand in solidarity with the Filipino community and offer our unwavering support during this time of mourning and healing. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the first responders, healthcare workers, and community members who acted with courage and compassion in the face of unimaginable tragedy.
With deepest sympathy and respect,
