Gathering Gifts from the Land

Gathering Gifts from the Land – Continue the Journey

Thank you for taking part in Gathering Gifts from the Land.

Created for the First Nations Health Foundation Charity Golf Classic, this experience invited participants to pause, reflect, and connect—with the land beneath our feet, with one another, and with the shared purpose that brought us together.

Throughout the tournament, guests collected six small gifts inspired by elements found in the natural world: Raven, Cedar, Fireweed, Salmon, Water, and Earth.

Each gift was chosen for the qualities it can inspire us to reflect upon. While every person may connect with these symbols differently, together they encourage us to think about relationships, reciprocity, resilience, responsibility, and the many ways that health and wellness are connected to the world around us.

Just as no element exists in isolation, neither do we.

Our wellbeing is shaped by our relationships—with family, community, culture, the environment, and one another. When one part of the system is strengthened, the benefits ripple outward. When we support one another, we all move forward together.

Whether you tucked these gifts into your pocket, displayed them on your desk, or shared them with someone else, we hope they continue to spark moments of reflection long after the tournament has ended.

The Gifts

🪶 Raven

Wisdom & Curiosity

Across many cultures, the raven is known as an intelligent and observant being.

For this journey, the raven represents the importance of remaining curious, open to learning, and willing to see the world from different perspectives. Curiosity helps us build understanding, strengthen relationships, and discover new ways of supporting one another.

Reflection: What can I learn by listening more deeply—to the land, to others, and to experiences different from my own?

🌿 Cedar

Healing & Generosity

Cedar has long been valued for its many practical uses and its enduring presence on the landscape.

For this journey, cedar symbolizes care, generosity, and the ways we support one another. Like the trees that provide shelter and protection, communities thrive when people share their time, knowledge, and resources for the benefit of others.

Reflection: How can I contribute to the wellbeing of those around me?

🌸 Fireweed

Resilience & Hope

Fireweed is often among the first plants to emerge after disturbance, bringing colour and life back to the landscape.

For this journey, fireweed represents resilience, adaptation, and the ability to move forward through change. Growth does not always happen in easy conditions, yet renewal remains possible.

Reflection: Where have I seen resilience—in myself, in others, or in my community?

🐟 Salmon

Perseverance & Reciprocity

The salmon’s journey is one of determination, purpose, and connection.

For this journey, salmon reminds us that what we receive and what we give are connected. Salmon nourish ecosystems, communities, and future generations. Their journey reflects the importance of contributing to something larger than ourselves.

Reflection: What am I carrying forward, and what am I giving back?

💧 Water

Life & Connection

Water connects landscapes, communities, and ecosystems. It moves, adapts, and sustains life.

For this journey, water represents interconnectedness and the understanding that our actions affect one another. Just as water flows across boundaries, our relationships extend beyond ourselves and shape the wellbeing of our communities.

Reflection: How do my actions create positive ripples for others?

🌎 Earth

Belonging & Stewardship

The earth supports us all. It provides the foundation for life, growth, and connection.

For this journey, earth represents our relationship with place and our shared responsibility to care for the environments and communities that sustain us. Stewardship begins with recognizing that we are part of something larger than ourselves.

Reflection: How can I help care for the people, places, and relationships that matter most?

Carry the Journey Forward

The gifts gathered throughout this experience are simple reminders of something profound: we are connected.

Connected to the land.

Connected to one another.

Connected through the choices we make, the relationships we build, and the ways we show up for our communities.

At the First Nations Health Foundation, we believe that lasting change happens through relationships, collaboration, and shared responsibility. These same values guide our work to advance self-determined health and wellness for First Nations people  and communities throughout British Columbia.

As you leave this journey behind, we hope you carry its spirit with you.

Spend time on the land. Stay curious. Care for one another. And remember that even small actions can create meaningful change.
