The First Nations Health Foundation (FNHF) proudly celebrates the appointment of Ruth Doreen Williams, C.M., O.B.C., to the Order of Canada. This prestigious honour recognizes her lifelong dedication to advancing the rights, health, and economic self-determination of First Nations people in British Columbia and across the country.
Originally from the High Bar Indian Band and currently registered with the Tsilhqot’in Nation, Ruth has worked tirelessly for decades to promote community-level economic and social development. She is a founding member and former President & CEO of the All Nations Trust Company, an Indigenous-owned financial institution that continues to play a vital role in supporting Indigenous businesses and entrepreneurs.
Ruth is also a founding board member of the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA), the first health authority of its kind in Canada, where she helped lay the foundation for a new model of self-determined, culturally safe healthcare. Her vision and leadership have influenced systemic change and continue to inspire future generations.
Her appointment to the Order of Canada adds to a long list of well-deserved honours. Earlier this year, Ruth was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal. She has also received the Order of British Columbia, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Thompson Rivers University, among many other recognitions. Each honour reflects her profound contributions and enduring impact on First Nations communities and beyond.
We were deeply honoured to have Ruth join us at our inaugural Together in Healing Gala presented by Scotiabank this past June, where she spoke from the podium and inspired all in attendance with her wisdom, strength, and vision. In her remarks, she spoke not only of the importance of Indigenous self-determination but also of the role of allyship—calling on friends, partners, and supporters to walk alongside First Nations people in the ongoing work of healing and equity. Her words reminded us that the work of wellness is not only about the present, but about creating pathways for generations to come.
The Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest civilian honours, celebrating individuals whose service has shaped the nation for the better. Ruth’s appointment is a profound recognition of her leadership and the lasting change she has fostered throughout her life’s work.
On behalf of our team, Board, and community, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ruth. We are grateful for her trailblazing contributions and her continued guidance in advancing self-determined health and wellness for First Nations people in BC.
